A Toddler With a Gun?

We had a really good time at camp last weekend. Benjamin got to try a lot of new things and meet a lot of new people. One of the things we did not knowing how he would react was Riflery. We rode the "People Mover" (a.k.a. Trailer behind a Suburban) down the bumpy dirt road to the Riflery Range and he did great. We gave him a set of Headsets for ear protection and to keep him from being scared by the noise of the other kids shooting and he wore them like a big boy for about 5 minutes. After that, he took them off and gave them back. The noise was clearly not an issue for him. Shortly after that, he started asking for his target and informing everyone that it was almost his turn. Obviously, no one in their right mind is going to just hand a 2 year old a loaded gun, but we decided to give him the illusion of participating. He was a very big boy, sitting on Daddy's lap and helping shoot the target. All seven shots hit the target and he was pretty proud of that target as he ran it back over to Mommy on the bench. Clearly, we don't want to encourage guns and violence, but we felt that in this environment, with this supervision, it was as good a time as any to expose him to the existence of this sport.
